At Friends of Schafer and Lake Sylvia State Parks (FOSLS), our mission is to protect and preserve our local state parks for future generations. We work towards conservation and improvement of these parks and promote public awareness of the need for future stewards of these amazing natural public spaces.
Founded in 2008, Friends of Schafer and Lake Sylvia State Parks (FOSLS) was created in response to the threat of the closure of these parks through state budget cuts. We saved the parks through petitions and public outcry and out of this, FOSLS was born. We continue our work to ensure that the next generation will benefit from this legacy.
We were very proud to receive the Washington State Parks Commission Honorary Mention for "OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION BY A GROUP" in 2020. Our achievements are truly a group effort, and we value each and every one of our team members.
FOSLS joins with WA State Parks every New Years Day to host the First Day Hike at Lake Sylvia and Schafer State Parks. Park Rangers and FOSLS Volunteers lead guided hikes for all abilities. We host the event with refreshments and help lead some of the various hikes around the lake for a refreshing start to the New Year.
We have lots of volunteer opportunities available, including trail maintenance, administrative duties, Social Media, building projects, public outreach, and event planning. Leave a message at info@fosls.org or (360) 703-4249 with your name and contact phone number.

Help us commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Schafer State Park on JULY 20, 2024 ! Schafer Park is one of the 7 oldest parks in the State Park system and we are planning a big birthday bash! Come enjoy the music, food, old-time games and activities, historical displays and more on this historical fun filled day!
Every December FOSLS hosts an old fashioned Yule Log Celebration at Schafer State Park. This celebration is a resurrection of the historic Yule Log celebration held at this park in the 1950's and 1960's and is a great way to celebrate the Holiday season with the family and friends.
